I just watched this video from Christmas Eve. I am so glad Peter caught it on tape. We'll laugh at it for years to come. Make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and pause the music before you watch this. The audio is priceless.

Christmas Celebration 2008
Peter & I woke up by 7:00am Christmas morning and were surprised not to have already gotten any wake up calls from the children. Right at 8:00 Alex wandered in in wet pajamas. We took care of that and rounded up the rest of the troops. I couldn't believe we were waking them! I told you that they were worn out. I think they were all comfortable in their own beds after four nights away.
Well, Elfie delivered in a big way! Conleigh was in complete shock at how big the dollhouse under the tree was. It was given to both girls and they both L.O.V.E. it! Our barbies have never been played with so much as in the last 24 hours.
Below is the first picture of the morning. I wish I had been able to center it a bit more, but the girls are screaming about the dollhouse and Alex is going for his bike.

We didn't have any gifts under our tree prior to Christmas morning because already I believe my kids would sneak a peek at what's inside.
Campbell didn't know what was going on when all the gifts showed up under the tree Christmas morning. Oh, she caught on pretty darn quick and was all about the word, "mine!" She was back in bed by 11:00 for a much needed nap. She flat wore herself out with the Christmas craziness. This cute cow puppet was in her stocking along with toothbrushes, candy and a small bouncy toy.

Alex was excited about his new bike. It is just the right size, and he can ride it like a champ already. Training wheels will come off soon, I'm sure. He has ridden it around the kitchen island about 100 times. By far, his most favorite gift came from Granny. She gave him the Batman Legos computer game. This is the scene for most of the day yesterday. Peter & Alex haven't spent so much time together in a long time. They are both addicted!

Peter got the Wii Fit from his mom. We have checked it out and will enjoy it.
It was a great relaxing day. Last night Granny and the girls watched the Nutcracker which they all enjoyed, and Daddy & Alex, oh, you already know that, they played Batman. We hope your Christmas day was filled with love, relaxation and all that you enjoy.
** We lucked out last week when our neighbors decided to sell the dollhouse, so we got a great deal on it, and it is in perfect condition.
** Our church has a toy sale each November, so I shopped that as well and a good number of the kids gifts came from there.

The Stockings were hung by the Chimney with Care

In hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there.
We zoomed back into town from our trot around Texas just in time to bathe and get to Christmas Eve church service. Granny got here in time to go to church as well. We went to the rock & roll service which I like and Conleigh enjoyed as well. The music was terrific even Peter admitted that. Normally we go to traditional service on Sundays. Alex & Campbell both opted for the nursery which I think was a wise decision for all involved.
After church, we closed the grocery store as they made their last call for people to find what they needed.
We came home, made some chocolate chip with crushed peppermint candy cookies for Santa, poured the milk, and then Conleigh counted out 9 carrots one for each reindeer.
With a last minute request to Elfie, our elf that sits on the shelf each day during December and reports naughty & nice children to Santa each night, Conleigh asked him to bring her a doll house. She added, "I know Santa is packing his sleigh right now, but you are making toys all year long, so if you can, I'd love a doll house to play barbies."
Somehow we wore out the kids. They all went to sleep and not one got up with a story about needing water or hearing reindeer on the roof or why they needed to stay awake. We elves got busy building bikes and wrapping last minute gifts...
By 11:00pm, we were nestled in bed as well.

Merry Christmas One & All
Dear Friends and Family -
I didn't include a Christmas letter with our cards this year. Mostly because I ran out of time and was not thinking about what I would say. I thought I could blog it instead.
We have had an eventful 2008.
Peter has remained very busy at work as a District Sales manager for Sysco Foodservices. He really enjoys his work and works hard at it. I have continued working part-time for Pearson Education. It is hard to believe I'll hit the 12 year mark with the company in January. Three of those years now have been part-time. This flexibility has allowed me to be home with the children 2-3 days a week.
Conleigh started Kindergarten this fall. She is learning so much and has already started to read and spell. She also loves math and Spanish. We are enjoying having her teach us all she has learned. She has also greatly enjoyed taking gymnastics once a week this fall. Loves it! I mean she loves it!
Alex & Campbell are going to preschool three days a week. It was a last minute change in schools for Campbell and it has been the best decision. Her language skills have greatly improved and she is very social with her friends at school. Alex always seems to have a group of good buddies to play with both at school and in the neighborhood. He played soccer for the first time this fall on the Katydids. He was pretty good but thankfully they didn't keep score at the games.
We have a travel filled summer with a road trip to Florida, a mom & dad trip to Costa Rica, and a Hardin family annual trip to Warm Lake, Idaho. All of those great trips are already documented on our blog, so no need to reiterate.
I am thankful for all of the support and love of our families. I am so thankful for the friends I can call anytime for advice and an ear. As I sit by the twinkling tree lights, I am thankful for Jesus and being able to celebrate his birth day.
Merry Chrismtas one and All.
Love, Kate

Deck the Halls
Singing songs til Christmas Day!
Deck the Halls with painted flower pots.
We went to a family friendly art show last weekend, the Cherrywood Art Fair. It was fun to look at all the local art offerings. We found a couple of gifts and the children got to use their artistic abilities to paint some flower pots. Now we need to plant the seeds and we'll be set.

Sunday Peter and I went back to buy the magic wand that almost cost us to lose a daughter. Conleigh was so angry with us on Saturday for not buying her the magic wand, she was ready to find a new family. So...we are letting Grandpa Hardin be the hero and give her one for Christmas. The woman we bought it from was quite interesting to say the least. The wand (a small copper pipe with beads on each end) was made on a Wednesday, in a waxing moon and was only brushed in one direction, etc. etc. I really wanted to laugh at her and Peter didn't like it that we were supporting this woman. Anywho, our daughter is still part of our family even though she doesn't even know she will be getting a magic wand for Christmas.

Joy to the World (for small children)
Singing Songs til Christmas Day

I bought a change counting bank. The kind that adds up the money as you drop change inside of it. At church last weekend, the youth had a table set up and were collecting money for hunger awareness. 26,000 children die daily because they do not have food to eat. It only takes $1 per day to feed a child. I talked with Conleigh about this and surprisingly, she remembered the 26,000 number.
Later that evening we decided that we would try to fill the bank with our change during the month and donate that to our church. The kids were enjoying putting their piggy bank money into the counting bank. I stopped them and we are doing it slowly now with money we find or even money they take out of their banks, but not all at one time.
Last Thursday night, the children were getting to bed late. We had had all the Sysco folks over for a holiday celebration. Conleigh has 2 books she is supposed to read to us each night. I was going to let her skip them that night, but she broked into tears wanting to read, so we did. She began to get silly and on the last page of the second book, she whipped the page over and r-i-p! Instant tears. She was devastated. I tried to reassure her that she was not the first kindergartener to tear a book, but there was no reasoning going on. After hugs and trying to get her to settle down, we told her she needed to get $8 out of her piggy bank. There is a paper that comes with her books stating the replacement cost is $8. In change, we counted out $8. She was so sad. She said, "I wanted to give all that money to the kids who don't have any food." My heart ached for my little girl. She was so sincere in her desires, but she also needed to learn the lesson of taking care of things that are not hers.
She went to sleep quickly that evening. By Thursday every week she is tired, and then to add the party and book incident to the picture -- pure exhaustion.
On Friday night, as I put her to bed, I offered for mommy & daddy to put $8 of our money into the counting back to add to our gift for the children's food. She liked that and thought it was a good idea.
Lord, I am thankful for the giving heart of my daughter Conleigh.

Do You See what I See?
Singing Songs til Christmas Day

Last night our family participated in the Live Nativity at our church. This year Alex was one of the three Kings. Campbell, Conleigh & I were angels and Peter was a shepherd. We have been participaing since Conleigh was baby Jesus in 2003. Alex & Campbell have both had their turn at being baby Jesus as well. The children love it. The Christmas story is told over the loud speaker and then acted out in front of the church. Different families participate for each show. I think eight shows are done each night. After our show, we stayed to watch the next one. I love this picture of the children watching the Christmas story.

By the way, did you know that some angels wear crocs?

Christmas Tunes
The day before Thanksgiving Oprah had a show about having a thrifty Christmas. I DVR'ed the show since we were on our way out of town. I was able to watch it upon our return Friday evening. One of the things she did was give the world 48 hours to download a selection of holiday tunes from a variety of artists. When I saw the show, I immediately clicked onto her website. I bet I was four hours too late to get the free itunes. Oh well. No biggie really.
Well, today I went up to the elementary school. I volunteer to put the kindergardeners pictures on a bulletin board for the Adopt-A-Book program. On my way out, the librarian stopped me and said she had a small gift for all the library volunteers. Guess what it was?
You guessed it! Oprah's Holiday Favorites. I was so happy. I think she was surprised at how excited I was. Anyway, it was such a nice surprise.
Remember to pull out your Christmas music. It IS the most wonderful time of the year.

Remote Controls
Alex is learning to master this...

So far, the only part he gets is the volume. Aaaggghhh!
But, it doesn't seem to bother her.

Campbell ate three servings of green beans last night without prompt. She was shoving them in her mouth...and today, she chose a banana over chocolate pudding. Miracles happen! :)

I am Thankful, Part 3

Dear Campbell,
My precious baby girl. I want to bottle you up right now and not let you get any bigger. You are so loving AND strong-willed. I am thankful.
I still don't think you've eaten a green vegetable. How WILL we get you to eat healthy? I love to hear your vocabulary growing. Right now your favorite thing to say is, "I'm hungry." I am thankful.
You are determined to keep up with the 'big' kids, but I want you to stay small. I love it when you lay your head on my shoulder and how you come cuddle up with a blanket beside me in a chair. I am thankful.
I love that you are girly and play with dolls and dress up like a princess. I am so thankful for you sweet Campbell.
Love, Mommy

I am Thankful, Part II
Dear Alex,
You have the sweet giving and forgiving disposition of your daddy. I am so thankful God decided I should have a boy. Your blonde locks and dimple melt my heart. I am thankful that you are such a protective big brother to Campbell and a willing to compromise brother for Conleigh.
I love that you like to sit with me in the recliner and beg to sit next to me at meals. I am thankful for your humor and the expressiveness in which you tell stories. I am thankful that you bless me with the word, "Mama".
I love you big boy!
Love, Mama

I am Thankful, Part 1
My Dear Conleigh,
You entered our lives on my mom's birthday at a whopping 5 pounds and 3 ounces. You have stayed your small, petite self through these five and half years I've gotten to love you so far.
I am thankful for your strong will. You are teaching me patience and love to the furthest measures. I am so thankful. Your creativity and interest in art is endless. Now that you are learning to spell, I am the recipient of many of your artworks that include ~I love mom~ on them. I am thankful for all of them.
I love the curls on your head and the stories that you tell. I am thankful that you love to be with me and crave one-on-one time together.
I am thankful for you my sweet daughter #1. I cannot imagine a lifetime without you.
Love, Mommy
Can you beat free?
In case you missed it, Oprah had a show where the Snapfish.com people gave away a free photo book. My sister sent me the info. I didn't see the show, but I knew that I wanted to take part in the freebie. So, where have I been? I've been busily putting together a photo book. I've done three in the past and just love them. There was a short time frame to take advantage of the offer, and since you can't beat free, that is where I have been. I can't wait to see the results. The book should ship to me shortly. It is a Christmas present for someone, so I'll leave it at that. Bye for now!

Please write a comment if you are reading my blog. Is anyone out there?
I just learned on another blog that if you don't have a google ID/username, you can click on comment and then click Name/URL, and you can put in who you are and write your comment. Simple Simon, met a pie man. Please let me know someone is out there!

The Artist....
formerly known as Daddy!
Can you say cake walk?
Our family volunteered to bring two cakes for the Spicewood carnival today. I made a simple chocolate with chocolate icing ditty. For the other more creative cake, Daddy & Conleigh went to work. Conleigh had a pink panther on her brain. Actually, Woody, the not no pink panther is the school mascot. She wanted to make a cake with Woody on it.
Here are the artists at work....

After mixing icing colors, Daddy quickly decided a Panther would be too hard and he convinced Conleigh that a butterfly would be the perfect cake. It wasn't hard to convince her, she loves butterflies. Here is the final product.

The library was FILLED with cakes. Peter's rough estimate is 300 cakes covering all of the tables in the library. We made a family decision at home that if the girls won the cake walk, we chose the cake and vice-versa.
Here are a couple of pictures of our adventures at the carnival.
Conleigh at the Mad Science booth!
Campbell doing the bean bag toss the way everyone should. She walked right up and would put it through rather than toss it.
Alex & Campbell climbing.
And, the cake walk. I figured we had great odds of winning if we covered four numbers of the 12 total. What is that? 4/12, take it to the lowest common denominator, 1/3! Yay! (Maybe I'll be able to help Conleigh with 2nd grade math!).
Round #1:
No luck.
Let's go find some other stuff to do. The local band of middle schooler's, High on Hot Dogs were playing. They are actually very good. We heard them this summer at the pool too.
Here is Alex doing the Catapult. They had buckets full of tennis balls. The kids sat in this contraption and pulled down the tennis ball and bang, it flew!
Oh yeah, we went to the hair paint booth too.
Strike a pose.

Cake Walk: round #2: We have a WINNER! After convincing Conleigh that Daddy could make another butterfly cake, she passed on bringing home the same cake we took up there, and chose a yellow cake w/chocolate icing.

And, the whole family left happy, full and tired!

Alex's Stats & Mousse Dance
Alex checked out A-OK at his four year well-check this week. He is hanging out in the 90th percentile for height at 42 inches and 95th percentile for weight at a solid 43 pounds. One night this week after bath, Peter moussed Alex's hair into a mohawk. Alex was quite proud of his "mousse hair". Watch the little jig he did singing about his hair and random other things. Also, watch as Campbell comes walking in. She is just looking at him like, "what a Kook!".

A Big Day
It is 1:00 and I'm sitting down. Nautrally, I turn the channel to FOX. I have been wrapped up in the political discussions. Yesterday I was heavy hearted and even my FOX folks seemed like they were giving in. Today I feel hope.

Out of the mouths of babes

Today Peter took Alex to the restroom at church. Alex was wearing new khakis and a long sleeve rugby shirt. He looked totally 4-yr old handsome. Here is the conversation Peter told me about.
Peter: "Alex, the ladies are going to love you. You are so cute."
Alex: "Yeah, and I'm hilarious."

Trick or Treat!
Practicing!
The Loot!Tonight Conleigh enjoyed her sixth Halloween. As I tucked her sugar-overloaded, weary body into bed tonight, we reviewed all of the costumes she has enjoyed.
2003 Ladybug
2004 Cow
2005 Hmmm...I have no idea
2006 Princess Belle
2007 Cat
2008 Witch
Just for kicks, Alex has dressed as:
in 2004, he came home from the hospital the day before Halloween and he was dressed as a little pumpkin. In 2005, did we skip Halloween? I cannot remember what either child was dressed as. 2006 - he was an air force man. Last year he was Spiderman and this year he dressed up as Batman.
Campbell was a cute Snow White this evening. She was transported in her carriage (wagon) to each house for trick or treating. She loved it! Last year she was a bumble bee, and her inaugural Halloween she got an impromptu Mrs. T hairdo and t-shirt by daddy. What a good sport.
The kids took naps this afternoon. Conleigh had quiet time on her bed. All of this preparation was well worth it for a fun, no melt-down Halloween evening. Katie & Grace and their brother Henry & their parents came over to trick or treat with us. We all went to the Jaeger's house where a very large group of neighbors went out together. With no streetlights or sidewalks in the neighborhood, it is dark and the cars are fast. The big group was perfect. All the parents could run interference on the few cars that came through. The kids filled their buckets with tons of c.a.n.d.y.
Now everyone is tucked in tight and will have very sweet dreams if the amount of sugar they ate contributes to their dreams. (grin)
